Mercedes is restrained with new bodies of its famous SL series, so when a new and fourth generation of the model series was announced in the early 00s, the market was in full swing. Each generation of the SL has moved the entire class forward and also often helped Mercedes into a new era. Once you decided to take the cover off the new R230, no one was disappointed. In the same way that the R129 chassis was a dramatic step forward, the new car felt like a spaceship next to the previous model. Gone was the angular styling and the new exterior offered round shapes and a modern luxury, but above all it was the new roofs that attracted attention. Although they weren't the first with it, this was the first time the SL model got a folding metal roof, something that gave the car a more beautiful profile with the roof up and at the same time better weather protection.
It was also the first generation where we got a dedicated AMG model, even though we saw AMG variants on the R129, it was always a bit of an afterthought at the end of the model series. The R230 was launched as the 320, 500 and SL55. And that is exactly what we have in front of us now, an SL55 from the 2004 model year. Timeless in its design. Brilliant Silver Metallic with the now iconic 19" split-spoke rims. The AMG variant also got a more aggressive exterior in line with its siblings with, among other things, new bumpers but also slightly more obscure differences such as other rear lights which gave the car a rather different look.
Open the door and take a seat in the full leather interior in gray black. The interior of the R230 still feels modern and this particular example is very well preserved thanks to the low miles. It is here on the inside that SL shows another new side of its personality. Exclusive material choices, nice spaces and world-class sound quickly make you see the potential here for a very comfortable GT car. In front of the driver is a clear and sporty instrument cluster where the tachometer and speedometer take center stage. The center console houses Mercedes' familiar Command system as well as climate control. Spending time here is something you like to do, and with the possibility of folding the roof, you can easily turn the luxurious coupe into a convertible. Turn the ignition and you are greeted by an unexpectedly angry supercharged matte V8 of a whopping 5.5L.
This example has been very sparingly used and has logged a mere 37,000 km on our roads. A brilliant example of one of perhaps the most special Mercedes cars of our time here in exactly the right execution. Last model year. Low miles and an extraordinary history.
