The V12 Ferrari convertible made a return after a long absence with the limited 550 Barchetta. This was a very special car, but let’s be clear: it wasn’t the most practical. There was only an emergency roof that could not be driven faster than 110 km/h, along with two Ferrari helmets. With the open version of the 575M, Ferrari took a few steps further. It needed to be unique again, but usable for the discerning customer who actually wanted to take advantage of the GT character.

The Superamerica features an innovative yet simply designed roof mechanism: the roof rotates 180 degrees backward in just 7 seconds and lies on the (entirely carbon-made) trunk lid. This way, the roof doesn’t take up storage space, and the trunk remains accessible. So, a Superamerica is quite practical.

This design was created by Leonardo Fioravanti, the man responsible for the designs of the F40 and Testarossa, among others. What makes the Revocromico roof special is the material that is used. The roof consists of a carbon fiber frame with electrochromic glass, allowing for a convertible feel even when closed.

Prefer not to have harsh sunlight in the interior? That’s possible too, as the tint of the glass is adjustable. The roof can block up to 99% of sunlight if desired. This system was also a first in a production vehicle.

Under the hood, we find a jewel of an engine. The 5.75-liter V12 features modified intake and exhaust designs, resulting in (even) more power than the closed 575M. The additional 25 horsepower may seem modest, but the total output of 540 horsepower is anything but. With an acceleration of 0-100 km/h in 4.2 seconds and a top speed of 325 km/h, it was the fastest convertible available at the time. Another nice detail is the asymmetric body: on one side, there’s an air intake at the hip, while on the other side, there’s the aluminum fuel cap.

Like its earlier namesakes, the Superamerica was produced in a limited edition: only 559 units were delivered worldwide.
