Mercedes-Benz SL 65 AMG Black Series / 1/350

It is true that some car models have a little extra hair on their chests. Something extra that gives just a hint of a personality that can only be shared with a pissed off football hooligan. In a small city just north of Stuttgart, they are good at manufacturing cars with that attitude. Mercedes' now in-house AMG arm operates from here, where performance variants of Mercedes models are still hand-built. Most things that leave the gates here tend to harbor thunderclouds under their hoods and have a sour relationship with their rear tires. It has sort of become the norm for AMG cars.

But sometime around 2005, in what one must assume was a meeting with illegal substances, it was concluded that what AMG needed was a special series of cars that were a notch more mad. The following year, a special edition of Mercedes' smallest convertible was shown. SLK. With a V8 and bucket seats. They somewhat set the tone for what would become a long series of special models under the name 'Black Series'. After the SLK, we got a Black Series variant of the cute little CLK, which now got wider fenders that should have been enough for two cars, a more stripped down interior and also here a V8. As I said, it is unclear what substances were ingested at the AMG office when it was concluded that all this was a good idea, but today we are happy about it.

But by far the best that would bear the Black Series name only came in 2008. The Mercedes SL65 Black Series. For those familiar with AMG's "65" cars, you know that this means that the heart is covered by the 6 liter M275 engine. Twelve cylinders that, together with two turbo units, do violence to the outside world. 661 hp. 1000 nm. Some performance models hide such figures under a discreet bodywork. Not the SL65 Black Series. The huge fenders widen the track width significantly and give the whole car an angry look. With the help of carbon fiber panels and replacing the folding roof with a fixed one, they also managed to reduce the weight by a whopping 250kg.

This example is one of a mere 350 cars that were produced for the entire world. Half of them went to the American market with a slightly more dowsile specification. of the remaining 175 cars we got in Sweden...two. Two cars were awarded to Mercedes Sweden. One went to Per Gessle. This is the second one. The angry exterior is dressed in a rather sober silver color that suits a Mercedes well. Although that is the only thing that is sober about this car. The huge wheels that measure a whopping 325 in surface area at the back hide an upgraded brake system with floating discs. Suspension has also received an overhaul with the help of coilovers from KW.

At a quick glance, the inside feels like an ordinary SL, but there is no doubt that it is something special you are sitting in. Carbon fiber bucket seats in leather and alcantara and a carbon fiber decor surround the interior. The instrument panel offers a gauge panel in black and one in white which discreetly at the bottom edge reminds you that you have a V12 in front of you.

A unique item for the Mercedes collector.
